Milky Tea Kid’s Music Blog Predictions For ‘Ones To Watch’

Posted on 25 February 2012 by milkyteakid

I haven’t been too far off with my predictions in the past, most notably Jessie J (she’s overdone it really don’t you think?), and there are some artists who I think will follow in her footsteps. You heard it here first! Here are my predictions:

Azealia Banks

This lady is a young New York rapper from Harlem who is only 20 years old. She is known for her explicit rapping and no nonsense approach. For example, she was signed to XL Records (Adele is also on this independent label) but left stating that, “Richard [Russell] was cool, but as soon as I didn’t want to use his beats, it got real sour. He wound up calling me ‘amateur’ and the XL interns started talking shit about me. It just got real fucking funny. I was like, ‘I didn’t come here for a date. I came here to cut some fucking records.’ I got turned off on the music industry and disappeared for a bit. I went into a bit of a depression.”
She knows what she wants and will most likely get it!

Rita Ora

This talented vocalist is signed to Jay Z’s Roc Nation, which is a good start for anybody in getting noticed. She covered Somebody That I Used To Know (that massive hit song by Gotye feat. Kimbra) on her Radio 1 Live Lounge appearance and it become popular in itself. The 21 year old is British but of Albanian descent. She featured on the number 1 DJ Fresh single, Hot Right Now which definitely put her on the map to the masses.

Stooshe

There is already a fair amount of hype for this trio of London singers, and way before they announced any kind of release date for their debut album. I met Stooshe in December and they were not only hilarious, great singers (note the Milky Tea Kid jingle they did) and down to earth but they had an undercurrent of determination to succeed no matter what. I’m especially looking forward to their debut album, which is out this summer.

Brother and Bones

Brother and Bones are another very talented bunch of musicians who are bringing back the full band energetic rock performance. The band is fronted by a talented songwriter singer with an acoustic guitar and I think they are different enough for the current pop market for them to stand out in the crowd. They are currently on tour with Ben Howard and building up a strong fan base as they go along. A gritty rock band with soul and energy – tasty stuff.

LIGHTS

I met the Canadian electro pop musician LIGHTS yesterday and she was a very cool lady. She had a hardcore group of fans some who travelled across the world to see her UK shows and most were queueing outside the venue at midday. I doubt it will be hard for her to build up more of a following in the UK, she has over 500,000 fans on Facebook already! She writes catchy electronic pop songs and they use a hell of a lot of instruments on stage and give a performance of a rock concert.
The interview with LIGHTS will be up on milkyteakid.com soon!

Amazing Live Session From Bon Iver At Air Studios – A Must See!

Posted on 22 February 2012 by milkyteakid

This amazing live session captures a truly unique Bon Iver performance, featuring Justin Vernon and Sean Carey. On recent tours fans will have become accustomed to seeing Vernon flanked by an eleven-piece band, with the swell in numbers lending a grandiose element to even his most delicate songs. Sidestepping expectations, the idea Vernon presented for this session was to provide a wildly different experience.

It was recorded in AIR Studio’s Lyndurst Hall and is a spectacular thing to witness. Bon Iver is slowly getting more noticed in the mainstream after winning a Grammy and being nominated for Brit awards in 2012. We do know however that Bon Iver have had a loyal and dedicated fan base for many years and deserve a bit of the spotlight!

Track listing:
1. Hinnom, TX
2. Wash.
3. I Can’t Make You Love Me
4. Babys
5. Beth/Rest

Who Does The Best Cover of Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’?

Posted on 20 February 2012 by milkyteakid

If you haven’t heard of Gotye and his massive song Somebody That I Used To Know featuring Kimbra then where have you been?! It was number 1 in 12 countries and become even more popular after an unsigned Canadian band, Walk Off The Earth, did a cover of it which went viral on Youtube. Their version involved five people playing one guitar.

Since then I have heard a number of covers of the song, which people have been able to make into their own style. I want to compile the best versions out there and need your help! Let me know on Milky Tea Kid’s Facebook or Twitter page or comment below on the post and I will update the blog with the versions we like!

Gotye feat. Kimbra

The Original (quite possibly the best version)

Walk Off The Earth

(The most well known cover)

Rita Ora – Radio 1 Live Lounge
