Last night I witnessed the seriously good live performance of Linda Harrison. If you are unaware of this lady then take a look at a Milky Tea Kid post on Harrison here to get caught up. I have had the pleasure of working with Harrison on a few different projects over the years and I was excited and slightly intrigued to go along to Alleycat in Denmark Street for the launch of her debut single, Overexposure.
I knew it wasn’t likely to be just another gig, and I wasn’t wrong! On arrival guests were met by a top hat wearing photographer, with a moustache that any gentleman would be jealous of. Throughout the night the crowd were photographed and the shots were instantly printed off there and then and stuck all over the walls for people to take away for free. I particularly liked the fact that they matched the theme of ‘Overexposure’ and were a great memory for the evening. First on stage was singer songwriter Carrie Haber who commanded the stage and the audience as soon as she sat down at the upright piano. With only one act before Harrison she had a lot to do to warm up the crowd but it was not a problem; for her or the crowd.
On stage to introduce Harrison was the lead actress in the Overexposure music video, Annette Kellow. The venue was packed to the back with friends, fans, press and people who came in after hearing the music from the street. Harrison launched into her set which included Supermodel, Love 2 Hate U, Breakdown, Love Flu and of course Overexposure. It was quite the multi-media event with cameras going off, lyric videos playing during songs on the projector behind the band and even a live stream of the gig online. The band were tight, loud and playing to the crowd and feeding off Harrison’s energy. By energy I mean standing on tables, on the piano stool and even at one stage contemplating a stage dive! When we got to hear the debut single live we also got to watch the music video playing behind the band. I believe it was during this song that glitter went flying everywhere as Harrison took a drumstick and attacked the drums for a bit. It was fierce and exciting and when Overexposure had finished the audience wouldn’t let her leave without another song. The set finished on a dirty dance-y number called Dirty Beat and all in all I think it was one of the most enjoyable single launches I have been to so far… best up your game industry, these DIY artists know how to get it done!
To round off the night was DJ Jon1st, an awesome DJ who kept everyone dancing and the party vibe going. I have to say it was a great night and when the Overexposure single was flying off the merch table at the end of the night, it was clear to see that everyone else thought the same. Random fact: Milky Tea Kid took the photo of Harrison for her single artwork. Snazzy!
