A name I am positive you will be hearing much more of this year is Farewell JR. It began as a solo project by Nick Rayner, who wrote, recorded, and mixed a number of songs that have essentially progressed to form the foundations of Farewell JR’s debut EP, Health. I was lucky enough to have Nick perform his music at the Milky Tea Kid Launch Party a few years back and I’m glad to see him back in the forefront of the music scene. Farewell JR is one of those projects where there were no expectations at the beginning and therefore there was a huge amount of freedom within the creative process. Speaking to Nick he said, “I never had any intentions behind this project. It was something that I felt I had to do, without any pressures or agenda. It was only the more & more I wrote, and the more I recorded when it became pretty obvious that should I want to ever perform it in its intended way I’d need more people.”
The resulting record is a stunning collection of emotive songs that grow from sparse guitar picked melodies, through to grand melodies and orchestral arrangements. The six track Health EP includes the first single Night Wolves, an ethereal track which is also the track available for free download below:
There is already a lot of support for Farewell JR having been picked up by BBC Radio 1 (Jen Long & Ally Mcrae, and Zane Lowe) and they recently supported Daughter and are about to head off on tour with Maps & Atlases.
There have been comparisons to Bon Iver and Arcade Fire but I think Farewell JR are one of those bands that stand tall on their own, but if you like the aforementioned bands then you will definitely like Farewell JR. They are playing a one off headline London show at St Pancras Old Church on 21st March which Communion are putting on and I highly recommend you make it along to see them live.
