British Youtube musician and personality (oooh snazzy), Alex Day had a chat with us about his latest release, Lady Godiva. What is so interesting about this guy, besides his clothes, is his outlook on the music industry and his perseverance when going it alone. It works because he manages to get into the top 40 charts with no record label support and no radio support… which is quite an achievement these days.
Check out the two part interview with Alex Day below where we talk about the ins and outs of being an unsigned Youtube musician.
(Acoustic performance of Lady Godiva and Behind The Scenes coming soon!)
Despite Coldplay calling their latest album Mylo Xyloto, (two previously ‘ungoogleable’ terms… that’s definitely a word) Coldplay are following up their release with a UK stadium tour. It can’t have been that much of a disaster then, surely!
Chris Martin, frontman of the hugely successful British band has himself called it a “disaster” to name the fifth album Mylo Xyloto… yes I did have to think hard about spelling it then. Fans all over the world have complained that they struggle to pronounce the name and can’t find it on the Internet. I doubt ‘Coldplay New Album’ would be difficult to find and have the same results but that says more about some fans than the band themselves.
The stadium tour starts in Coventry on the 29th May with support over various dates from Robyn, Rita Ora (Jay-Z’s new signing), Ash and Marina and the Diamonds.
Are you going? Get your Coldplay tickets soon, I would imagine they will sell quite quickly!
“The Futureheads have been together for a long time now. And we have the right to do something different.” – Barry Hyde
It is true that the The Futureheads have the right to make a record that is very different, in this case a record with no instruments at all. It is called Rant, and it is strictly a cappella. I think all artists have the right from the beginning to be creative in however you see fit, being pigeon holed is annoying! So it is nice to see The Futureheads taking advantage of this opportunity.
Set for an April 2nd release through their own label, Nul Records, Rant will feature a variety of re-arranged Futureheads songs alongside medieval and traditional folk songs. The release will be accompanied by a UK tour which will feature only a capella and acoustic performances, including a show at London’s picturesque Union Chapel. This is going to be spectacular! Sign me up for tickets please…
One of the songs from The Futureheads’ back catalogue that has been reworked for the album is Robot and you can hear a stream of that below.
Straight from Ross Millard’s mouth… “If we were gonna carry on making music, we needed to change it up. Making another Futureheads record as per usual wasn’t something that appealed to us. We’ve always been a four-part harmony group; it’s been a massive part of the genetics of this band.”
Ethan Ash is another singer songwriter with a pop soul edge to his music but he has something to set him apart; his rich vocal tone. I am in love with the sound of his voice if that is possible. He has just returned from a tour with friend, Ed Sheeran after a summer of festivals that included Bestival, Cambridge Folk Festival and a main stage slot at Secret Garden Party.
His latest video is for his song All I Need and features beautiful footage from the wedding of Ethan and Ed’s friends Phil and Cheryl. Definitely an artist to be watching for next year.
We met up with the fantastic new band Brother & Bones who I think will no doubt be everywhere very soon. They are a popular festival band and are off on tour with Ben Howard this month.
Hold Me Like The Sun is the first single being released by the band and is out on November 14th. I recommend seeing this band live as they have a very explosive live set which is great to witness, we talk about it more in the interview below:
The guys performed two acoustic tracks for us as well called Skin & Bone and the new single Hold Me Like The Sun.
